If the songs of Future Islands once seemed like invitations to scenes from someone else's life, then the album “People Who Aren't There Anymore”, released in January 2024, presents the entire captivating saga - transforming pain into hope and marking a triumph in the band's career. Here, excitement, devastation, understanding and the first rays of redemption come together in 44 minutes - an album that finally captures the full force of Future Islands on tape.

Since the beginning, Future Islands have been unique and instantly recognizable. Samuel T. Herrings' life-scarred vocals are underpinned by Gerrit Welmers' melodies and charged by the rhythms of William Cashion and Michael Lowry. This basic principle has not changed on “People Who Aren't There Anymore”, but the people behind it have. Herring's voice resonates with a pain and joy previously only known from her legendary live performances, but never captured on a studio album - until now, when she seems unleashed for the first time.

Future Islands have played almost 1,500 concerts during their career - performances that have scarred their bodies, strained vocal chords, given audiences an escape and healed their ambassadors. “People Who Aren't There Anymore” is the significant work of a band at their turning point: they are discovering new ways to experience the world because the old ones no longer work. This newfound freedom has led to the most complete and honest statement in the band's 17-year history.
