RETRO DANCE MUSIC WITH SUBURBAN SWAGGER
Formed during the COVID lockdown in a home studio in the suburbs of Melbourne, Playlunch have created a sound entirely their own: a chaotic, genre-bending mix of retro dance, late-90s and early-2000s Australian nostalgia, and tongue-in-cheek suburban swagger. The band themselves call this uncompromisingly high-energy style “Bogan Funk”.
Behind Playlunch is producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Bell, who, together with the band, turns unfiltered chaos, humour and surprisingly precise songwriting into an explosive live dynamic. Somewhere between sweaty school-disco euphoria, ironic party madness and infectious hooks, their shows land between festival excess and collective state of emergency.
With their debut Who’s Ready For A Good Time?, Playlunch laid the foundation for their rapid rise in Australia in 2023. But the band is far more than a viral trend. With their second album Sex Ed, they refined their sound in 2025 and further developed their “Bogan Funk”. Above all, Playlunch have built a reputation live as one of Australia’s most exciting new bands. The group turns every show into a euphoric whirlwind of dancing, singing along and total escalation.
